My First Encounter with Jewelry Photography
I had been recently asked from a client who owns a neighborhood jewelry store to take some photos of his jewelry so he could post on his site, plus make an effort to sell on eBay. I had built his site for him (my primary occupation is webdesign, nevertheless i do dabble in photography a touch too) and i also did product photography previously, but never in jewelry. I had heard it’s as hard to photograph jewelry since it is kids and animals, but I’ve been one to get a challenge and hate being beaten, thus i chosen to accept the work and find out the remainder when i went along.
Before I traveled to his store, I naturally charged my battery in its Nikon P600 Charger so I was good to go. My first trial as to what I had had been a freebie to him to learn methods to perform work, as well as to establish the best positioned in their own store. He i want to use a room that looked like something out from the Godfather to accept photos. And So I brought my equipment along, my lighting equipment, tripod, camera, Nikon EN-EL23 charger, spare battery, plus a white backdrop to try to acquire a consistent image. It was my first mistake. I set my equipment up, camera on tripod, lighting stands, and also the ring in the white backdrop. My lighting wasn’t adequate for a start and whatever way I moved it, made little difference. I tried all kinds of angles as well as took out my backdrop to identify a more unique strategy for presenting the jewelry. Frustration was setting in fast. The white background and the white gold of the rings was making it hard to get a better result. After a few hours trying, I made a decision things i was doing wasn’t working. I had been not happy together with the results.
I chose to pack up and do a little more research and will come back at another time. Looking at it deeper, the very first thing I needed was actually a dedicated lighting tent. They were available for less than $100, I purchased one, it was 17″ x 17″ x 17″ so an effective size for doing not just jewelry. It had LED lighting stitched in, and a selection of four backdrop colors, black, white, gray plus a light blue. I got myself the tent, and as soon as arrived set it up, and took some shots of my wife’s jewelry. What 86dexmpky difference. Although my wife’s jewelry didn’t sparkle as brand-new jewelry, the final results were very encouraging. I had excellent lighting, and most importantly, it absolutely was consistent. I immediately contacted my client and arranged another trip to try the tent out and also to see the results. Again, it had been a freebie when i was determined to get this suitable for him before going full force into photographing his entire stock. The results were far better, I was able to obtain that consistent look and also the lighting was great, but there seemed to be still more to get done. You will discover what else I did in this article to generate to get more professional looking photos.
